My involvement with Rotary actually began with my daughter Rebecca.  Prior to her involvement with Rotary, my knowledge of the organization was limited to a vague awareness of Rotary projects such as their work on the new fountain in the GaltGardens.  I became much more aware of what Rotary did when Rebecca started participating in different Rotary events.  My daughter participated in both Rypen and Ryla during her High School years.  She told me recently that the Rypen weekend was quite life changing for her.  She then applied for and was accepted to participate in the Rotary Youth Exchange.

Over the past twenty years as my children were growing up, most of my volunteer experiences revolved around them – serving on School Councils, being a Girl Guide leader and so forth.  As they moved into adulthood, I began to look for an organization that would allow me to continue to volunteer and meet new people without necessarily having anything to do with my own children.  I looked at several of the service groups including Kiwanis having volunteered at the music festival for a number of years and appreciating what they do for the music community in Lethbridge and Southern Alberta.  Rebecca suggested I look at Rotary as well; which I did.  I liked what I saw.

What I liked was joining a group of fun, community-minded people who were open to meeting new people and who put together projects that were enjoyable to work on.  As a morning person, the Sunrise group easily fit into my schedule without sacrificing one evening per week.  I feel that I have been very blessed in my life and I want to be able to give back to the community in which I was born and raised.  So that is why I joined Rotary.
