 Dr. Walsh spoke on Medical Assistance in Dying at the last meeting. She address how the legislation has come into being and how it is being implemented in our region. The Chinook Health Region was instrumental in ensuring that they had a MAID team in the South as originally only two were planned one in Calgary and one in Edmonton. She spoke of the requirements under the new legislation as well as some of the court challenges to the existing legislation that are already in the works. She underlined the safeguards that are in place to ensure protection of vulnerable persons. In addition, she walked us through the process that takes place when someone would like to access Medical assistance in Dying and how the team works with patients at this difficult time. Finally she shared some thoughts of someone whose mother had accessed MAID. It was an excellent presentation on a very difficult issue. |
