Why I Joined Rotary by Ian Randall
I guess I have been service-minded for about as long as I can remember. When I was young I was involved in 4-H and Boy Scouts. My Dad was always helping out the needy in our small town and was a member of the Lions Club, a school board trustee and a social activist. He lived his life based on Albert Einstein’s statement that only a life lived for others is a life worthwhile.
I have been blessed in my own life in so many ways. So when I had the opportunity to pay some of those blessings forward through joining Rotary International my decision was a no-brainer.
Through helping with
the gestation of the local Dragonboat Festival and observing the willingness and
effectiveness of the local Rotary clubs to work collaboratively I began to
appreciate the scope of social benefits Rotary provides locally and
internationally.
When Diane, my wife (who was already a member), approached me and asked if I was interested in joining Rotary I made a decision I’ve never regretted. I actually look forward to Thursday mornings and the convivial atmosphere at our breakfast meetings.
Everyone involved with Rotary is there for the right reasons – not to promote themselves or their business but to provide “Service Above Self” in any way they can manage. I am very thankful for the opportunity to do likewise.”
