The mission of Scientists in School - www.scientistsinschool.ca - is to ignite scientific curiosity in children so that they question intelligently; learn through discovery; connect scientific knowledge to their world; are excited about science, technology, engineering and math; and have their interest in careers in those fields piqued. The vision is every Canadian child actively engaged in the seeing, and doing and understanding of science.
Wendy described Scientists in School and showed us a variety of science tricks, including:
- The Dyson fan trick which uses the Bernoulli principle to multiply the air flow.
- The standard three cup shuffle trick where she poured water in one cup and ... it never came out again.
- An endothermic reaction in a zip lock freezer bag. The bag got cold!
Scientists in School began in Ontario in 1989. Lethbridge first presented in October 2010 and has since been shown in schools and at Hutterite colonies all over southern Alberta. This year they already have 450 workshops scheduled.
Our club donated $1840 so that each and every class at Westminster School can participate.
